If you are a fan of Arthurian legends and folklore about Camelot and the Knights of the Round Table, Meg Cabot’s Avalon High will be a refreshing escape from reality. Okay, I know Avalon High is not exactly a new release, but I only recently checked it out in our school library, as I am not a huge fan of Meg Cabot’s light, girly stories, and shockingly enough, I was instantly hooked. The entire concept for the story is based on a theory or legend that King Arthur is not really dead but merely asleep, waiting to rise again to restore peace to the world. The problem? The whole Lancelot, Guinevere, Arthur thing keeps getting King Arthur killed. What’s different this time? Elaine Harrison, the daughter of medieval researchers on sabbatical, arrives at Avalon High, shaking up the relationship between Lance, Jennifer, and A. William Wagner. As the plot weaves together a modern-day Arthurian legend of betrayal, vengeance, and love, Elaine realizes there may be more to her parents’ medieval obsession than she ever believed. I read this book one lazy Saturday afternoon in about three hours, and I loved it so much that I read it again yesterday. I usually find myself enjoying darker literature in the Paranormal Romance or Urban Fantasy genre, but Avalon High contains the perfect balance of mystery, suspense, action, and romance. Though I am not typically inclined to pick up a Meg Cabot novel (as I did not care for the princess series, Teen Idol, or Ready or Not), I thoroughly enjoyed Avalon High and would certianly recommend it to anyone, teenager or adult, who is looking for a great way to escape reality for a couple of hours while reading a fun story at the same time.
