Nevermore by Kelly Creagh

Forums:

Kelly Creagh's debut novel, Nevermore, is probably one of the best Young Adult novels I've ever read and quite possibly THE best YA paranormal novel I've ever read. Riddled with details about the mysterious life and death of Edgar Allan Poe, Creagh creates a compelling, spine-tingling and mysterious story that will keep you turning pages. Her main characters, cheerleader Isobel and goth boy Varen, are three-dimensional, realistic characters that win instant sympathy among readers and quickly become beloved for their strength of character, quirk and loyalty. I began reading this book at 7 a.m. yesterday as I waited for my plane at the airport. By the time I landed at my final destination at around 1 p.m., I was on page 312. I quickly finished the novel--which was impossible to put down--around 8 p.m. There is nothing on the market right now like Nevermore. I was so refreshed to read something void of vampires, werewolves and fallen angels that I tore through these pages, hanging on every word. Filled with historical details about everyone's favorite creeptastic poet, Nevermore is a first-rate, well-written novel you won't want to pass by at the bookstore. For those of you who read it, what did you think?

I'm in love with Varen. What a beautiful, sad, endearing character. I also really like Isobel, and it's nice to have two characters who actually seem to deserve each other (I disagree with Mr. Bruce [the one-eyed bookstore guy] about her). I think I would have enjoyed this novel a lot more if I'd been more familiar with all of Poe's writings. I was a Poe addict back in the 8th grade, but that was back when I had a teacher to explain everything to me in small words. I'm not the type of person who's got the kind of brain to decipher the deeper meanings in his writings. For me, it's like appreciating someone's voice while they speak in a foreign language, but not being able to understand the words.

I agree with you about being able to escape the endless vampire & angel themes as of late. It was refreshing to have something different for a change.

Right now I'm surpremely annoyed with having to wait to find out what happens next.

I, too, am eager to find out what's next for Isobel and Varen. I absolutely cannot wait until the sequel, Enshadowed, comes out. You can read all about it and see the cover at http://blog.kellycreagh.com/. In fact, her entire website is well done and definitely worth checking out. I, personally, have always been a Poe fanatic, and it was my favorite subject to teach while I was working the the school systems, so of course, I was all about Nevermore. Lately, with school, writing, and work, it's been very rare for me to stay completely on the edge of my seat with any book, much less one that is lengthy--but the characters had me instantly hooked. Glad you enjoyed it. I'm glad I was able to entice you to read it! :)
