I’m a drudge for Tenth Grade Bleeds

written by: Rebekah Harris in Book Reviews, Heather Brewer

If you think Eighth Grade Bites and Ninth Grade Slays, just wait until Tenth Grade Bleeds, the third and by far most blood boiling installment in Heather Brewer’s The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod series. Life at Bathory High School for a half-human, half-vampire sucks even more in tenth grade than in years past. In fact, Vlad’s battles with the stuck-up kids at school, the constant threat of evil vamp D’ablo, and even his problems with best pal and drudge Henry aren’t likely to let up any time soon.  Sprinkle on the disappearance of his Uncle Otis, the terrible nightmares, and an overwhelming urge to snack on girlfriend, Meredith, and you have the perfect ingredients for the action-packed, heart-wrenching, and hilarious misadventures of a teen who wants to fit in, even though he is born to stand out.

And this year, the bad blood between suspected-Pravus Vlad and his nemesis D’ablo is starting to boil. In an attempt to beat out the Pravus prophecy, D’ablo has sent yet another henchman to destroy Vlad and steal his new vamp-human hybrid powers. However, instead of running scared, this time, Vlad will address the conflict head-on with humor-laced action sequences that will have you cheering for Vlad.

Heather Brewer has truly outdone herself with Tenth Grade Bleeds, once again luring her Minions in with fast-paced plotting, non-stop action, heart-wrenching conflict, and combines it with wonderfully dry humor that gives readers a story they can truly sink their teeth into.  This novel is so absorbing that when I sat down to read it, I had barely realized the time that had passed before I was turning the final page in the hopes of reading more.  Brewer perfectly combines the struggles of high school with both internal and external struggles of life to create a setting, conflict, and tone that can only be found in the deep, angst-ridden world of teenagers.

The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod has become one of my favorite YA series of all time, but Tenth Grade  Bleeds certainly stands out as the greatest of the great.  I certainly look forward to the next books in the series as Vlad continues to come of age and come into his own.  As a recently-recruited minion, I commend Heather Brewer’s ability to tell one heck of a story, and I highly recommend this entire series to those who are not yet acquainted with Vladimir Tod.
